At Filson Gentle Dentistry, we know that for some people, sitting in a dental chair brings up all the things they don’t like about dental treatment – injections, discomfort, confined spaces, and unpleasant noises. It’s almost a reflex, and you may not even be sure why you have these feelings. You just do, and that’s all that matters. If you experience a lot of dental anxiety, sedation dentistry may be for you.
Effective Sedation Methods
In recent years, many dentists have taken a proactive approach to managing your anxiety. We know that the only way we can help you achieve good oral health is to get you here. But we also know that you’re more likely to avoid treatment if you’re really anxious about dental visits.
Your complete comfort is our highest priority. We offer several effective sedation methods, and we’ll work with you to find the one that’s most appropriate for you.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is usually the first type of sedation we recommend for anxious patients. It’s mild but effective because it allows you to remain conscious while the activity around you fades into the background.
We’ll monitor you throughout your procedure, and if you need us to increase the level of sedation, we’ll be right there to make sure you’re completely comfortable. One important benefit of nitrous oxide sedation is that after the procedure you’ll be able to go on with your day with no after-effects.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Depending on your needs, we can also recommend oral sedation. Dr. Filson or Dr. Hei will prescribe a sedative for you to take prior to your arrival at our office to help you relax before your appointment even starts.
The sedative will help you remain calm and relaxed during treatment, and we can also add nitrous oxide to really put you at ease. Just remember that with oral sedation, you will need a designated driver to get you to and from our office.
IV sedation works well for patients with a very high level of anxiety. It is reliable because it has an amnesic effect and patients usually remember little of what happened while they were sedated. For this reason, we often use IV sedation for more invasive procedures like tooth extraction.
The sedative is delivered intravenously, so you’ll feel the effects immediately. For your complete comfort and safety, we have a nurse who will monitor you during your treatment.
