"I got my smile back today! Thank you Dr. Hei for your masterful work I just can't stop smiling. Beat Your Dental Anxiety With Sedation Dentistry

Dentists are often associated with discomfort and pain, which can cause a lot of anxiety when you need to go in for more than just a routine visit. Many people feel so much anxiety when they think about visiting the dentist, that they will avoid going until they are in extreme pain. At Filson Gentle Dentistry, we offer our Bayport, MN patients the option of sedation dentistry to help them relax and feel more comfortable during any procedure so they can receive the dental care they need without the stress.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of sedation to help patients relax and feel more at ease while receiving dental care. There are a few different types of sedation to choose from depending on your preference, the procedure you are getting, and what your needs are.

  • Oral Sedation – For those who prefer oral sedation, your dentist will prescribe a pill for you to take about a half an hour before your appointment time. It is important to have someone drive you to and from your appointment because oral sedation can affect people differently and may last for several hours. Most people who use oral sedation will be fully conscious during their treatment but have little to no memory after the sedation wears off.
  • Nitrous Oxide – Nitrous oxide is easier for your dentist to control than oral sedation, which means you can go back to your day to day tasks right after your dental visit. Most patients will also be on the edge of consciousness while under nitrous oxide, but will have no memory of the procedure.
  • IV Sedation – IV Sedation is often used for more invasive dental procedures or procedures that will take a few hours or more. Those with extreme dental anxiety may also benefit from IV sedation because it puts the patient completely under. It also works as an anesthetic so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.
