Do I really need x-rays?
We can find a lot of problems with a visual exam. But decay and gum disease may exist in the spaces between teeth or near the roots. These spots are impossible for us to see unless we look at a digital radiograph (x-ray).
At Filson Gentle Dentistry, we use state-of-the-art digital x-rays. They give us a highly detailed and accurate picture of what’s happening in and around your teeth.
We can identify problems at their earliest stages to protect your oral health, save you time, added expense, and possible discomfort. Digital x-rays are also very safe, and reduce your exposure to radiation by as much as 90% compared to traditional film x-rays.
If you’re a new patient, we usually recommend a full set of x-rays that act as a baseline for future treatment. Otherwise, the frequency for x-rays really depends on your dental history and the current state of your oral health.
We may determine that your current oral health calls for x-rays as often as every six months. If your teeth are currently healthy and you have no record of recent dental problems or gum disease, you may only need x-rays every couple of years.
Please give us a call, and we’ll answer all your questions about x-rays and whether or not it’s time to update yours.
