Can I go to sleep for my procedure?
Many patients ask us this question, and we’re happy to say that we do have sedation options that address all levels of anxiety.
We recognize that you may just want to “check out” during your treatment. That’s okay, because if you’re calm, you can relax and get the care you need. It also allows us to work more efficiently, reducing the time you need to spend in the dental chair.
One method that’s effective for people who are very anxious is IV sedation. A nurse comes to our Bayport dental office to monitor the process and ensure your complete comfort and safety.
A common misconception, however, is that IV sedation will put you to sleep. While you may become so relaxed that you doze off, many people stay away for the procedure. This is good because it allows us to communicate with each other during treatment so we can make sure you’re comfortable.
You likely won’t remember much (or anything) about your procedure. There are two reasons for this. First, IV sedation induces a state of very deep relaxation so that you’re not affected by what’s taking place around you.
Also, the sedative used for IV sedation usually produces partial or full memory loss from the time we administer the drug until it wears off shortly after your procedure. This makes time seem to pass very quickly, and since you don’t remember anything about the procedure, it may appear as if you went to sleep.
We also offer other options for reducing your anxiety. Please call our Bayport dental office for more information.
