Bacteria that are always present in our mouths cause periodontal disease (gum disease). You may be more likely to develop gum disease depending on how well your body and immune system fight infection.
One definite sign of periodontal disease is gums that bleed when they’re gently touched. The bacteria and their toxins have essentially overwhelmed your immune system. When this happens, the lining of the gum tissue next to your tooth becomes inflamed.
The danger is that these toxins actually become embedded in the root surface of the tooth. Without periodontal treatment, the bone that supports your teeth will start to deteriorate. Unfortunately, this bone loss is permanent, and if it continues, it will result in tooth loss since there’s be nothing left to support them.
Preventing Gum Disease
If you already have gum disease, we’ll work with you to develop a plan to fight the infection and get your oral health back on track. But there are steps you can take to prevent gum disease from ever taking hold.
Inefficient oral hygiene is the primary cause of periodontal infections. You may be brushing and flossing regularly, but you want to make sure that your efforts aren’t wasted. During your cleaning, our hygienist will be happy to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to get the most out of your oral hygiene routine.
Regular cleanings at Filson Gentle Dentistry are an easy, cost-effective way to avoid gum disease. During every cleaning, our hygienist will check your teeth and gums for signs of infection. With early detection, gum disease can be controlled without surgery.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
If we find that you have gum disease, a thorough cleaning may be all that’s needed to restore gum health. One of our skilled hygienists will also apply Arestin, a topical antibiotic that continues to fight infection after your cleaning.
For more advanced stages of gum disease, however, we need to perform a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. At Filson Gentle Dentistry, we use a gentle ultrasonic device for this treatment.
Scaling eliminates plaque and tartar that sit on your teeth, collect bacteria, and cause inflammation. Root planing smoothes the root of your tooth, removing surfaces of the root where bacteria collect.
We’re also pleased to offer laser dentistry, and we may decide to use our dental laser to remove any infected tissue lining the gum pockets. Since your comfort is our primary goal, we recommend treating one quadrant of your mouth at a time.
Gum Disease and Your General Health
Gum disease is not just a serious oral health problem. The health of your mouth is directly linked to the health of your body. Chronic gum infections put your well-being at risk because they contribute to heart disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, and even pregnancy complications.
With proper care and regular dental cleanings, you may never have to worry about periodontal disease. If it’s been a while since your last cleaning, we encourage you to give us a call to arrange an appointment.
At Filson Gentle Dentistry, you don’t have to worry that we’ll judge you by your oral health care or lecture you about what you may or may not be doing right. We don’t worry as much about where your oral health has been as where it’s going – starting today.
